OHMYGOSSIP — Lucy Fallon left ‘Coronation Street’ at the “worst possible” time.
The 27-year-old actress – who has seven-month-old Sonny Jude with boyfriend Ryan Ledson – was cast in the role of Bethany Platt on the ITV1 soap opera in 2014 but quit the part just weeks before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and after announcing her upcoming return to the show, explained that she feels “peaceful and happy” even though she was starved of acting opportunities because of the lockdown.
Speaking on the ‘Soap from the Box’ podcast, she said: “I had been advised by my agent that I was with at the time. I’d been there for five years and done a lot of amazing storylines and knew it would tail off a little bit. I knew if I stayed I would have a year or so not doing very much. I think that just happens. You can’t just get storyline after storyline so I made the decision to leave based on the fact that I wanted to have new opportunities but the problem for me was that I left in January 2020 and we went into a global lockdown in March 2020 so it was possibly the word timing. On paper, it was bad timing.
“That was just the worst possible timing ever but in those three years I’ve had a lot of life changes. I’ve done different shows, I did ‘Tom Jones’ a couple of years ago, I have done other things. I did ‘Don’t Rock the Boat’, a reality thing. I did ‘All Star Musicals’. So I have done things but if I hadn’t left I might have been stuck in situations that I didn’t particularly want to be in. Now I feel peaceful and happy, I’ve got a baby and a nice boyfriend.”
Lucy had landed the part of Bethany after their initial choice Katie Redford was discovered to have lied about her age at the time of the audition and explained that while it was a “weird” set of circumstances that led to her professional debut, it was all “meant to be” in the end.
She added: “I ended up getting the callback and then it was like a workshop with the other people who were auditioning for Bethany. Then it was a screentest. Then I got the call that I didn’t get it. The agency I was with at the time, well, I hadn’t signed with them yet but they were willing to sign me if I got the part. When I didn’t get the part, they said I had to audition to be in the agency.
“They then got the call to say I had got the part because the other girl had lied about her age so it was taken off her. So then I signed with the agency. It all started circulating on Twitter. I think maybe her Twitter handle had 87 in it so people thought it was her date of birth.
“I don’t know how it happened, I think she was just advised poorly by the agent she was with at the time. I got the call and I got the part and – even though it’s the weirdest way – everything does happen for a reason. It was meant to be mine.”
Lucy is set to make her return as Bethany in scenes set to air after Christmas and a TV insider explained that the idea of a comeback came about after she had been able to figure out how to “juggle” childcare with work.
A source told The Sun on Sunday’s Bizarre column: “Bosses reached out to her a few weeks ago about the possibility of coming back, and told her everything they’d planned for Bethany if she agreed.
“She discussed it with her boyfriend, and family, because she’s a mum now with a baby.
“Once they’d talked about childcare, and how best to juggle it all, she was able to say she’d love to return.”
