OHMYGOSSIP — Ncuti Gatwa will begin filming for ‘Doctor Who’ in November.
The ‘Sex Education’ star was unveiled as the Fourteenth Doctor by returning showrunner Russell T. Davies in May and The Hollywood Reporter claims that he will get the keys to the TARDIS by the end of this year.
Ncuti will take over from Jodie Whittaker, whose four-year spell as the Thirteenth Doctor is set to come to an end in a special episode in October to mark the centenary of the BBC.
Another special episode is set to be broadcast in 2023 to mark the 60th anniversary of ‘Doctor Who’, with the Tenth Doctor David Tennant reprising his role and Neil Patrick Harris featuring as a villain.
Ncuti, 29, will return as Eric Effiong in the fourth series of the Netflix hit ‘Sex Education’ and his first full series as the Doctor is unlikely to air until 2024. He is also set to appear in the hotly-anticipated ‘Barbie’ movie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
The decision to cast Gatwa as the Time Lord has been praised as “sensational” by Matt Smith – who portrayed the Eleventh Doctor.
The 39-year-old star said: “I think it’s the most sensational bit of casting.
“What an actor – he’s brilliant in ‘Sex Education’.
“I think he’s got something ‘other’ that that part really needs.”
Smith added: “I think it’s an inspired piece of casting, and along with Russell [T. Davies, showrunner], who’s such a great leader of that show.
“I don’t know if you’ve seen him in ‘Sex Education’, there’s a warmth and wit and a real depth to his talent that I think … honestly, I think it’s an inspired bit of casting and I’m really, really excited for the show.”
