OHMYGOSSIP — Gok Wan doesn’t see himself as being famous.
The 47-year-old presenter started his career as a fashion stylist and eventually appeared on TV screens in 2006 fronting Channel 4 hit ‘How to Look Good Naked’ but explained that he has “suddenly” found comfort since being “thrust” into the spotlight.
He said: “I’ve never been more confident with who I am as a person. I’m going to be 50 in two years’ time so I’m pleased I’ve suddenly found this space of comfort. It feels hugely liberating. [Since starting out on TV], I’m less chaotic and concerned about what people think of me. When you’re suddenly thrust into the limelight, everyone wants to know you and find out who you are. I made a deal with myself that I was just going to be honest about the stuff I was happy to talk about and I think that’s allowed me to have a really nice relationship with the public. Because I don’t see myself as famous. I’m just me, doing my job on a camera a lot of the time.”
Meanwhile, the openly gay ‘This Morning’ star – who has previously opened up about suffering from anorexia in his 20s and received an MBE for services to fashion and social awareness – added that he “gets as much out of” speaking out about issues that have affected him as he does hosting glitzy showbiz events.
He told Metro newspaper’s SixtySeconds column: “I guess because I’ve spoken openly about things like eating disorders, obesity, sexuality – the big stuff I’ve been through in my life. When I was growing up, I didn’t have many people to look up to for references, so I really enjoy having that role. I recently did an LGBTQ+ talk in a school and I got as much out of that as I did hosting the ‘Sex And The City’ worldwide premiere at Leicester Square.[I’m most proud of] still being here. That’s the honest truth, and people thinking I’ve still got something to give. Getting the MBE was such a massive honour, as one is is winning the RTS [Royal Television Society) awards.
