Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell will front documentary about her home city

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Derry Girls’ star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell is fronting a new documentary about her home city.
The actress – who played Michelle Mallon in all three series of the Channel 4 sitcom – is teaming up with the broadcaster for a special project entitled ‘The Real Derry: Jamie-Lee O’Donnell’.
The documentary will explore the star’s own upbringing in the Catholic community in Northern Ireland, as well as how things have changed since she grew up.
The film will also look at what the future could hold for Derry, including the younger generation there who are living “with the impact of the Troubles”.
In a press release, Channel 4 said: “Viewers will hear from real Derry girls, students at Jamie-Lee’s old school, about the regeneration of the city and why, despite this, many young people feel that they need to leave Derry to gain new skills and experiences.”
Daniel Fromm – the broadcaster’s Commissioning Editor, Popular Factual – commented: “I’m hugely excited to be working with Tyrone Productions on their first commission for Channel 4 – and with Jamie-Lee in a brand new role for her.
“‘Derry Girls’ has brought the city to national prominence, now this film gives a voice to a new generation of its young people, so they can tell us what it’s like to grow up there in 2022.”
And Patricia Carroll – executive producer for Tyrone productions – added: “As a Northern Ireland company, we are delighted to be working with Channel 4 and Jamie-Lee O’Donnell on this very personal documentary at such an important time in the city’s story.
“Fiercely proud of her home city, Jamie-Lee is the perfect person to explore Derry’s past and share her hopes for its future and we know that Channel 4 audiences will be both entertained and intrigued by what she discovers.”
Meanwhile, Jamie-Lee – who starred in the show alongside Nicola Coughlan (Clare Devlin), Louisa Harland (Orla McCool), Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Eric Quinn) and Dylan Llewellyn (James Maguire) – recently admitted she would be interested in a ‘Derry Girls’ spin-off.
She said: “I mean let’s be honest, I would take [creator Lisa McGee’s] phone call any day of the week about anything. But because every single character has so many layers to them and different personalities, the spin-off possibilities are endless.
“It would be interesting to see if that’s something Lisa is interested in.”
