OHMYGOSSIP — Gemma Collins starts over-eating in times of crisis.
The 40-year-old TV star – who first found fame on ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ – has always struggled with her weight, and has confessed to piling on the pounds when she feels stressed or upset.
Gemma explained: “I think I have always turned to food in … in times of crisis.
“I mean, any occasion – if I’m happy I eat, if I’m sad I eat. But I think it’s about dealing with your emotions and trying to find a way of dealing with them in a healthy way and not turning to something that can harm you, because it is like a form of self-harm.”
Gemma has been on the receiving end of abusive comments on social media and even in the street since she first found fame.
And she can still vividly remember feeling embarrassed by one particular incident.
Gemma told ‘Piers Morgan’s Life Stories’: “It was so embarrassing once, I was taking my mum for lunch, a van pulled up and they started abusing me. It wasn’t for me, I felt so hurt that that happened in front of my mum.”
Gemma now feels more comfortable in her own skin than at the start of her TV career.
But she regrets that her family and friends have been exposed to the “downside to fame”.
She said: “I’m used to it but I didn’t want my mum to hear it.”
Despite the criticism, Gemma has become a huge success in the TV business, starring in ‘Gemma Collins: Diva’ and hosting her own podcast on BBC sounds.
However, she doesn’t feel the need to rub her success in the faces of her critics.
She explained: “I don’t believe in revenge and two wrongs don’t make a right. I hope that they’ve worked on something within themselves.”
