OHMYGOSSIP — Suzanne Shaw “can understand” the criticism aimed at ‘Dancing on Ice’ for overstretching the NHS.
The 39-year-old star won the ITV figure skating series in 2008 and is a fan of the show but can accept the backlash the series has received for putting additional pressure on the health service amid the coronavirus pandemic due to several medical emergencies with this year’s contestants and celebrities.
Pro skaters Yebin Mok and Andy Buchanan required hospital treatment after being hurt when rehearsing with partners Graham Bell and Rebekah Vardy respectively, whilst contestant Denise Van Outen also dislocated her shoulder.
The former Hear’Say singer wrote in her Closer magazine column: “Our NHS is already struggling under the strain of the pandemic, so does it help if people are heading into hospital because of injuries created by an entertainment show?
“I can understand the public backlash ‘DOI’ got over that. I love the show, but I hope it doesn’t take up any more of the NHS’ time.”
Yebin revealed that she was left “counting her lucky stars” after Graham’s blades went into her shin during training. The blade cut through Mok’s muscles and left her needing an operation but she was grateful that her bones or tendons weren’t slashed.
The 36-year-old figure skater wrote on Instagram: “Absolutely gutted I won’t be able to skate on @dancingonice with Graham these couple of weeks.
“Graham and I had a freak accident during our practice on Monday where his blade went into my shin.
“Such unlucky timing but also counting my lucky stars as I cut through the muscles, and not nerves, bone, vessels or tendons! How I didn’t cut any of that they say is a miracle.”
