OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Flesh And Blood’ has been cancelled after one season.
The ITV thriller – which first aired in February and ended on a cliff-hanger after four episodes – left many viewers hoping for a second run, but the broadcaster has confirmed there are no plans to continue the story.
A spokeswoman told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: “ITV felt ‘Flesh And Blood’ was a self-contained and beautifully complete story.
“There won’t be a second series for this reason.
“But we’d like to thank the production team and actors for producing such a brilliant and compelling drama.”
The show starred ‘Downton Abbey’ actress Imelda Staunton as Mary, the nosy neighbour of a family split after the matriarch Vivien – played by Francesca Annis – finds a new man called Mark (Stephen Rea).
The cast also featured the likes of David Bamber (DI Doug Lineham), Claudie Blakley (Helen) and Russell Tovey (Jake).
Writer Sarah Williams has previously insisted there were plenty of ideas to develop the story in the future.
She said: “There is further meat on the bone. I love these characters and I did get very attached to all of them. I would love to follow on their story.”
Sarah heaped praise on ITV for their taking “a risk” on the idea.
She explained: “In the end, ITV took a risk on my idea – even without any scripts – even when the idea didn’t automatically fit into its genres. It knew that and still went with us.”
Russell revealed he would have been delighted “to do more”, but suggested a second series was dependent on Imelda’s schedule for ‘The Crown’, with her role as Queen Elizabeth potentially being a “bit of a problem”.
He hinted: “I’m hoping something is on the cards for ‘Flesh and Blood’ next year, but there’s nothing official.
“It’s about availability. Imelda is playing the queen in ‘The Crown’, so that’s a bit of a problem!
“But I’d love to do more!”
