OHMYGOSSIP — Piers Morgan says it’s “shameful” that government ministers won’t speak to Kate Garraway on ‘Good Morning Britain’.
The outspoken broadcaster has repeatedly called out the government for not appearing on the ITV breakfast show to answer questions during the pandemic, but he urged them to at least be interviewed by his co-star, whose husband Derek Draper has been hospitalised since March following his battle with coronavirus.
He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “OK, don’t come on when I am on.
“But to not come on when Kate is presenting. Really? You are going to snub someone whose husband is in a coma from Covid. It’s shameful.”
Susanna Reid insisted the government at least owed it to Kate to let a minister appear on the show when she is presenting.
She added: “If there is one member of the team to whom they owe a particular duty to explain policy and answer questions, it would be Kate. It’s shocking that they haven’t done that.”
Piers described the government as “gutless little weasels” and claimed they are trying to avoid “ferocious fires” in the form of tough questioning.
He said: “The government’s handling of the pandemic has been woeful and cost thousands of unnecessary deaths, and they should have their feet held to the fire.
“But they have managed to get to a position where they don’t expose themselves to any ferocious fires any more. It’s very nice for them but in my view they are a just a bunch of gutless little weasels.”
The 55-year-old journalist has been regularly calling out the government during the coronavirus pandemic, and he has shrugged off backlash after Ofcom decided not to investigate complaints about previous interviews with Matt Hancock and Helen Whately.
He explained: “What Ofcom did about our awful haranguing of these poor little ministers … it was a very important moment for the TV regulator.
“They could easily have rolled over in the face of public opinion. I am sorry about those interviews – I am sorry I didn’t go harder.”
