OHMYGOSSIP — Hugh Quarshie thanked his ‘Holby City’ friends and family for the “good times” as his character Ric Griffin departed the show after 19 years last night (10.11.20).
The 65-year-old star bowed out of the medical programme in a dramatic episode as the series returned following a three-month absence, due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Ric left the hospital for Ghana.
Hugh – who was born in Ghana’s capital city Accra – wrote on Twitter: “To all #Holby friends & family on the occasion of Ric Griffin’s last episode: There were many reasons for keeping on going back to the series, and many of them will be on screen tonight. Thank you all for all the good times. Griffin may be gone, but Holby lives on! (sic)”
The episode saw Ric wake up from a coma, where he had been for two weeks after undergoing brain surgery, to find the hospital in chaos as a result of the pandemic.
He later argued with Holby City’s CEO Max McGerry (Jo Martin) about the lack of PPE in the hospital, and he befriended a patient from Ghana, whose last dying wish was to make Ric promise to look after her baby.
However, it looked as though Ric may also meet his maker as he was struck down with coronavirus and fell into unconsciousness, but he thankfully survived and headed to the African country with the baby.
Several stars and ‘Holby’ fans took to Twitter to thank Hugh for his time on the show.
Jimmy Akingbola – who had a short stint as Antoine Malick in ‘Holby’ in 2011 – tweeted: “Oga … you are a legend! Thank you for everything. Loved working with you and learning from you my friend. From BBC Radio World Service days to @BBCHolbyCity days… Let’s work together again soon @HughQuarshie (sic)”
Chizzy Akudolu – who previously played Mo Effanga in ‘Holby’ – wrote: “I’ve adored you for decades and working with you was always a joy. You’re a legend @HughQuarshie
“Wishing you all the best. Until the next time Red heart #holby (sic)”
Former ‘Holby’ casting assistant Ben Cogan wrote: “I remember back in 2001 (when I was working as a casting assistant on Holby City) – my mentor: @JaneDeitch popped in to see me after @HughQuarshie’s audition with a beaming smile of a lady who knew she had struck gold! You have been incredible ever since, Hugh … a Holby God! (sic)”
Hugh replied: “My thanks @JaneDeitch and you! (sic)”
And Jane tweeted: “No thanks required @HughQuarshie. You are a consummate actor and a true gentleman. My love and massive best wishes for the future. Xx (sic)”
A tweet on the official ‘Holby’ Twitter account read: “Thank you Mr Griffin. Thank you @HughQuarshie (sic)”
