OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Michael Parkinson has praised Piers Morgan for being “tough” on his guests.
The 85-year-old chat show legend had some very kind words for the ‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter and his interviewing style, particularly throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
He’s quoted by The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column as saying: “God knows we need someone as tough as him nowadays.
“My job was to make it as entertaining as possible. With Piers, he’s got to challenge people and have enough knowledge to sensibly dispute something.
“He’s very necessary and the politicians who don’t go on his programme should be ashamed. He does brilliantly well and thank God he does… long may he reign.”
Meanwhile, Michael admitted he was inspired to write his book ‘Like Father, Like Son’ – which he penned about his late dad – after Piers helped him tap into “the grief” over his death during an interview on ITV’s ‘Life Stories’.
He added: “I felt quite confidently that nobody could reach it and he did. From that point of view I’ve got a lot to thank Piers for.
“He’s already sent me a text saying I owe him a huge lunch. It’ll be a wet lunch too.”
During the appearance last year, the TV icon apologised for upsetting his friend Sir Billy Connelly with comments about his health.
In 2018, Michael had claimed his friend – who he has been to since the 1970s – didn’t recognise him at a dinner they had together, which the 76-year-old comic – who has Parkinson’s disease – and his wife Pamela disputed.
Speaking during his appearance on ‘Life Stories’, he revealed he wrote a letter to his pal which said: “There is no way in this world I would hurt you, or deliberately demean you.”
He added: “I got a lovely reply, saying, ‘Let’s go back to how we were, old friends.’ ”
