OHMYGOSSIP — Ray Meagher has “never been fitter” after undergoing a life-saving operation earlier this year.
The 76-year-old actor underwent a triple bypass surgery in 2019 and was recently forced to have a stent fitted in order to fix a blockage in his heart, but Ray has returned to work on ‘Home and Away’ and is now feeling better than ever.
The actor – who plays Alf Stewart in the long-running Australian soap – said: “It’s all done now, and I’m sure everybody played their part.
“I’ve never been fitter and have been working long days on ‘Home and Away’. We’ve been trying to catch-up on what we dropped in the nine weeks we were closed down during Covid.”
Ray initially thought he’d dodged a bullet by undergoing a triple bypass last year.
But seven months later and despite “doing all the right things”, he suddenly experienced symptoms that made him feel anxious.
He told New Idea magazine: “I was on one of those walks, going up a very steep hill, when I did feel a little bit of shortness of breath and just a twinge.”
Ray subsequently underwent a series of medical checks and was told he needed to head back to the operating theatre to “fix another blockage”.
The veteran star is now encouraging people to seek medical advice if they have any health concerns.
Ray – who joined the soap back in 1988 – said: “Heart disease is a major killer in Australia. I encourage everybody to have a check-up – to go and see the doctor. The heart is the motor under the bonnet and if you haven’t got that going, you’ve got nothing.
“So, if your body is telling you it’s a bit crook, you can’t just ignore it.”
