Boxing legend Sir Henry Cooper dies, aged 76

Legendary boxer Sir Henry Cooper has died at the age of 76. The English, Commonwealth and European heavyweight champion passed away at his son’s house in Oxted, Surrey, the BBC reports.

Cooper, a two-time winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year, is widely regarded as one of the greatest British boxers of all time, and recorded 40 wins from 55 professional bouts before retiring in 1971.

Cooper is best remembered for his trademark left hook and his knockdown of Muhammad Ali during one of their two high-profile fights in the 1960s.

Despite never winning a world championship, Cooper had his sporting achievements recognised in 2000 with a knighthood.

Stephen Fry paid tribute to Cooper on Twitter, writing: “Oh dear. Just heard about the passing of Henry Cooper. What a fine man… a sad day for British sport.”
