OHMYGOSSIP — Paul O’Grady taught McFly to eat fire.
The ‘Obviously’ hitmakers – comprising Danny Jones, Tom Fletcher, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd – have partied with the likes of Liam Gallagher and Sir Rod Stewart in the past but don’t think they’ve ever had “crazier” nights than with the late ‘For the Love of Dogs’ host, who died last month.
Danny told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: “We had two crazy nights out with Paul, ending up at a burlesque club. We got more and more excited and more and more drunk… it was amazing. He completely outpartied me.”
Dougie added: “Paul was your burlesque go-to man. He taught us all how to eat fire, too… it burns and it’s terrifying!”
Drummer Harry praised Paul for always being genuine and sincere and admitted they were grateful to count the Lily Savage star as one of their few showbiz friends.
He said: “A lot of celebrities are extroverts but as we’re quite quiet, we’ve not made many celebrity mates along the way.
“Paul was one we really had a chemistry with. We met on his TV show and he always made us laugh. He was genuinely interested in us.”
Paul shot to fame as pioneering drag queen Lily Savage in the 1980s and made regular appearances as her right up until the early 2000s, when he abandoned his alter ego completely in favour of carving out a career on screen as himself with his own self-titled chat show.
And Harry Hill recently praised the TV legend for doing “his own thing” when it came to his career.
He said: “He was his own thing. And then he rested his own thing. He created a whole scene, he didn’t come up through the comedy clubs that I came up in. He created a new thing and he was…I was full of admiration for him because he killed off that Lily Savage thing that everyone loved.
“I don’t know what he thought about it but maybe he realised it didn’t have the long-term [appeal]. And the fact about Paul O’Grady…what people loved about him, and what I loved about him, is that not just that he was funny but you loved him being himself which you probably never would have got with Lily Savage.
“This is why everyone is so kind of shocked and upset about it. He was a one-off, there’s no other word for it.”
