OHMYGOSSIP — Rosie Marcel is leaving ‘Holby City’.
The 43-year-old is exiting the role of medic ‘Hollyoaks’ star Annie Wallace has called for Riley Carter to return to ‘EastEnders’.
The 55-year-old star – who became the first-ever transgender person to play a regular transgender character in a leading UK soap when she joined ‘Oaks’ as Sally St. Claire in 2015 – has backed Riley to reprise his role as Kyle Slater in Albert Square and be given some “really excellent storylines”.
She wrote on Twitter: “Wouldn’t it be nice if Stacey’s brother Kyle came back to the Square and he was given some really excellent storylines? @MrRileyCarter1 @bbceastenders @AllAboutTrans (sic)”
Riley made soap history by becoming the first transgender man to play a regular transgender character on a British soap in October 2015 when he made his ‘EastEnders’ debut as Kyle Slater.
But in 2018, the actor admitted he was also keen to play characters who are cisgender – an individual whose gender matches their “assigned” sex at birth.
He said: “I’m proud to be transgender, but I like to explore different things and different roles as an actor.
“I don’t want to just be pigeon-holed into trans roles, I want to explore the cisgender roles.
“The trans label should be taken off – just see us as actors.”
Riley – who departed ‘EastEnders’ after one year – previously admitted his part in the BBC One soap “opened the pathway for other roles”, but said it is “more of a struggle” to land cisgender roles.
He explained: “[It] feels like we are cast as people with a limited ability when there’s a massive range of ability.
“[It’s] more of a struggle to get those cisgender roles.”
Following his ‘EastEnders’ departure in November 2016, Riley felt “frustrated” that his character didn’t get a chance to have a “normal life”.
He said: “I was disappointed it was not shown that Kyle had a normal life. He had the big coming-out story and it was dramatic and emotional, but we didn’t get to see a happy ending, like a relationship of any sort other than the reunion with his half-sister, Stacey. It was frustrating.
“I felt I let myself and the fans down as I could have pushed for something. It’s a shame to have gay characters and then you have to say goodbye.” after 16 years on the BBC One serial medical drama.
Discussing her departure with Digital Spy, Rosie admitted that family commitments in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic influenced her decision.
She said: “I’m sad obviously – I love the show and I’ve been there a really long time.
“But it got a stage where I was just so tired and really needed that break, to the point where I’ve not really done anything else and I don’t want to – I want to take time off.
“I’m well slept currently which is very nice. Homeschooling is obviously very difficult for everyone at the moment and I’m very grateful that I can be here and do it. I am feeling good and positive.”
Jac’s final scenes will air on February 2 and will see her live left on the line after she and troubled boyfriend Kian Madani (Ramin Karimloo) are held at gun point. The star revealed that she has decided to leave to spend more time with her family.
Rosie explained: “I just wanted a break and spend time with my family – I haven’t spent a lot of time with my daughter or my husband.
“I didn’t want to get to a point in my life where I thought, ‘I really wish I’d taken time off’ – I didn’t want to be that person with regrets. It was a big decision.”
Marcel added that she will miss uttering her character’s “one liners”.
She told Metro.co.uk: “I’m definitely going to miss her one liners. Where else can you get away with saying the awful things she says? You just can’t!
“I will always look forward to reading an episode and seeing who she’ll pick on or who she’ll upset! Those things I’ll miss, and I’ve always been extremely lucky that I’ve been given wonderful storylines, I’ll miss that too.
“I’ve been there such a long time – I’ve loved all of it! All of her storylines have got happy memories for me.”
