OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Coronation Street’ producer Iain MacLeod says Emmerdale’s plane crash storyline in 1993 sparked a soaps “arms race”.
Iain previously worked as the series producer on ‘Emmerdale’ between 2015 and 2018 before he moved onto the same position at ‘Coronation Street’, and he admitted the plane accident plot, which took place 27 years ago, created huge competition between the major soaps, as they aimed to be “bigger” and “crazier” than their rivals.
The producer also insisted ‘Corrie’ – which is celebrating its 60th anniversary on December 9 – has a “distinctive tone of voice” that isn’t present in other soaps.
Speaking to the Radio Times magazine, he said: “It’s true to say that the soaps have been in an arms race ever since that plane crashed into ‘Emmerdale’ in 1993. We’ve been competing as to who can go bigger, better, louder, crazier.
“I don’t want to disparage the other soaps, but ‘Coronation Street’ has a distinctive tone of voice. I’m not sure that there’s such a thing as the ‘EastEnders’ tone of voice. We pride ourselves on finding space for idle chit-chat. Somebody’s always got something funny to say, no matter how bleak things might be.”
And stars of the ITV soap agree with Iain, as Sally Dynevor – who plays Sally Metcalfe – and Sally Ann Matthews (Jenny Connor) have both said the programme is focusing on character-led storylines that show off the personalities of everyone in Weatherfield.
Dynevor said: “We can get more into the mindset of our characters. We’d lost that dimension over the years, as we’d been trying to keep up with other shows. But we’re now going back to how it was years ago, which is wonderful.”
Matthews added: “It’s been the real bonus of lockdown. The producers have recognised that, yes, we need action, but we also need to explain who these characters are. And you can’t really shock viewers with guns and hostage situations – they’re so used to seeing that kind of thing on telly. And back when I started, a ‘Corrie’ wedding would happen once every five years, but now we have them once a month.”
