OHMYGOSSIP — Will Mellor turned to drink when his dad died in April.
The former ‘Hollyoaks’ actor has admitted he “drank more than [he] ate” after losing his father Bill to cancer earlier this year aged 76, before realising he was consuming too much wine and beer, so he turned his attention to bike rides and family walks instead.
Will – who has children Jayden, 16, and Renee, 12, with his wife Michelle, who he married in 2007 – said: “It was really tough. It’s been the hardest year. My dad passed away in April, so I was struggling with a lot of stuff.
“I probably drank more than I ate.
“I was getting through lockdown with wine and beer, and then realised that wasn’t a good idea, so I started to get into fitness.
“I was going on bike rides with my daughter, and my wife, and we go for walks.
“What matters most is making sure you’re mentally healthy.”
The 44-year-old actor admitted his father was his “hero”, and it was “horrendous” not being able to embrace him during the coronavirus lockdown.
He said: “When I found out it was cancer, I went and sat in his garden five metres away from him. I was talking to him, but I couldn’t hug him.
“And the last thing he said to me was, ‘If I got hold of you I wouldn’t be able to let you go.’ He went two weeks later.”
Will has also tragically lost his sister Joanne, who passed away from a heart attack eight years ago aged 44, and he turned to drink and gambling following her passing.
He added to new! magazine: “I was drinking and gambling too much and my wife sort of recognised it. I’m not saying I was depressed, I was just in a dark place.”
