Bon Jovi launch competition for support acts

OHMYGOSSIP — Bon Jovi are holding a competition to find an opening act for their tour.
The ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ hitmakers – comprised of Jon Bon Jovi, David Bryan, Tico Torres, Phil X, and Hugh McDonald – are heading out on the ‘This House Is Not For Sale Tour’ around North American throughout February, March, and April, and are now holding a competition to find a selection of acts to help kick off the shows.
Writing a statement on their website, the band said: “Every great band starts small and builds their rep one show at a time. That’s the opportunity we were given and now we want to pay it forward. If you’re ready for the arena stage, submit your audition tapes and join us in playing for the best audiences in rock music.”
To enter the competition – which is being promoted by Live Nation – hopeful acts must upload their audition videos to Bon Jovi’s website, or via the Bon Jovi or Live Nation Facebook pages.
Live Nation will then choose 10 finalists, and from those the ‘It’s My Life’ rockers will then pick six winners, one for each block of dates, averaging at each winner playing around five shows.
According to the website: “Those chosen will demonstrate that they have the sound, style, and substance to open an arena show.”
And this isn’t the first time the rockers have enlisted the help of local and regional artists to help them on their tours, as they previously called for local support on 2006’s ‘Have A Nice Day Tour’ and 2010’s ‘The Circle Tour’.
For one lucky support act, the tour even involves two nights at the prestigious Madison Square Garden in New York in April.
The competition is open now, and the final set of winners will be picked on or around March 12 2017.

David Bowie's Hunky Dory voted favourite record by BBC 6 Music

OHMYGOSSIP — David Bowie’s 1971 LP ‘Hunky Dory’ has been named his best record by BBC 6 Music’s listeners.
Fans of the ‘Let’s Dance’ hitmaker – who died in January this year aged 69 from cancer – picked the winning album from 10 of the music legend’s biggest records, including his most recent, ‘Blackstar’ and 1977’s ‘Heroes’, to mark the first anniversary of his death (10.01.17).
The record was played on vinyl by Gideon Coe on his show on Monday night (09.01.17).
The 49-year-old radio presenter said of the choice prior to playing it: “It’s got to be done properly so I’ll be playing it off vinyl. Side one, then turn over after ‘Quicksand’ and play side two. I’ll try to make the transition a smooth one.
“Really looking forward to it
“It’s a lovely record and the whole vote has been a reminder of just how many great albums Bowie made.”
Paul Rodgers, the Head of BBC Radio 6 Music, said: “What better way for BBC Radio 6 Music to celebrate the life and legacy of one of music’s most extraordinary artists than to reflect on some his best records. We’re really looking forward to finding out which Bowie album is the most popular amongst 6 Music listeners and then listening to it together in Gideon Coe’s show.”

Prince's music heading to streaming services before Grammys?

OHMYGOSSIP — Prince’s music could be heading to streaming services in time for the Grammys.
The late ‘Purple Rain’ hitmaker’s estate are reportedly edging towards a deal, which involves putting the music legend’s songs on Apple Music and Spotify before a star-studded tribute at the Grammys on February 22, which Billboard reports could feature the likes of Rihanna, The Weeknd and Bruno Mars.
According to the magazine, Prince – who died from an overdose in April aged 57 – could be remembered with a TV advertisement tribute, which could be aired during the prestigious awards ceremony and promote that his music will be made available on such services.
The publication also reports that talks are being held between a record label, publishers and performing rights companies to agree on a deal, however nothing has been confirmed.
In November, Prince’s music was at the centre of a row between Universal Music Publishing Group and Tidal.
His estate agreed to sell the singer’s songwriting rights to Universal – meaning his music could become more widely available to stream – but Jay Z’s company insisted they have exclusive rights to the work.
According to the New York Post newspaper, Tidal – who put out Prince’s final albums, ‘Hit n Run Phase One’ and ‘Hit n Run Phase Two’ – began lobbying a Minnesota court before the Universal deal was struck, claiming the ‘1999’ singer had granted them exclusive rights to his catalog of master recordings.
Tidal submitted a legal letter to probate court Judge Kevin Eide and claimed they would seek injunctive relief if any deals struck by Prince’s estate – which still has ownership of his songs – violate the agreement they made with the star.
According to Tidal, Prince had agreed to grant them streaming rights to a ‘Hit n Run’ remix album, another new LP and the rights to his back catalog.
However, a source claimed Tidal only had a one-year deal to stream Prince’s music and are not entitled to rights in the long term.
Prince’s estate is managed by industry veterans L. Londell McMillan and Charles Koppelman – who were appointed by bank Bremer Trust – but the ‘Little Red Corvette’ hitmaker’s siblings are reportedly not happy with McMillan and are also keen on being involved with controlling the rights to his music.
In 2015, the singer pulled all his music from other streaming apps such as Spotify.

Wiley claims new album will be his 'last'

OHMYGOSSIP — Wiley has claimed his new album ‘The Godfather’ will be his last record.
The grime superstar has said that he has decided to stop making studio albums after his 10th LP is released on Friday (13.01.17) as he plans on using his fortune to do “other smart things”.
Speaking to Noisey, he admitted: “This is my last album in theory.
“You know, Wiley’s the brand, you’re not going to see me trying to cane the arse out of tens of Wileys, you will not.
“I’ll always use my money to do other, smart things.”
Meanwhile, the 37-year-old MC has taken a swipe at fellow grime star, Kano, saying he put out his record ‘Made In The Manor’ – which came out in March – at a time when the genre was fashionable and said it was a “good album” for his collaborator, Blur’s Damon Albarn.
He said: “I think it was the wrong album to be made by Kano at a time when grime was in fashion.
“It was a good Damon Albarn album in the first place, to be fair.
“Why do I know that? I like Damon Albarn. You know what I am saying?
“I’m happy for him and all the success, but that was the wrong album to be made in this time by that artist.
“If grime is in and it’s popping, and you can see Stormzy and anyone else bringing it back, and you’re so good at it, you could have just given a fifteen track grime classic to follow up ‘Home Sweet Home.'”
Wiley – whose real name is Richard Kylea Cowie – prematurely announced his plans to retire in 2014/2015, before he released 2013’s ‘The Ascent’.
At the time, he said: “Even though getting to the top of the charts is a big deal, people forget that I’ve been doing music for 15 years now and yeah, I could keep releasing music and chasing another hit, but I want my next project after The Ascent album to be my last – I’m planning on retiring around the end of 2014 or 2015.”

Liam Gallagher blasts Noel for 'brown nosing U2'

OHMYGOSSIP — Liam Gallagher has blasted his brother Noel Gallagher for “brown nosing” U2.
The 49-year-old guitarist was announced as the main support act to the Irish rock band on their forthcoming ‘The Joshua Tree Tour’ on Monday (09.01.17), and the ‘Live Forever’ singer has since taken to Twitter to seemingly share his disgust in his sibling’s gig announcement and has accused him of sucking up to U2.
Taking to the micro-blogging site, he wrote: “I see all that brown nosing is finally starting to pay off NO SHAME LG x (sic)”
The outspoken rocker’s comments came after Noel shared how thrilled he is to get to open for his idols.
He said: “It will be both a pleasure and an honour to play my part in what still remains the greatest show on earth.”
The ‘Some Might Say’ hitmaker has always been vocal of his love for the rock group – comprised of Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. – and thinks their 1987 hit ‘With or Without You’ from ‘The Joshua Tree’ LP, which turns 30 years old this year, is one of the best songs “ever written”.
He previously said: “I love U2 and if you don’t get it and shame on you for not. ‘With or Without You’ is one of the greatest songs ever written.”
Liam – who is currently working on his debut solo album – has showed no signs of ending his on-going rivalry with Noel, as the “brown nosing” comment comes after he called him a “scary clown”.
The 44-year-old singer regularly mocks his older sibling and former Oasis bandmate on the social networking website, frequently comparing pictures of him to a “potato”.
Liam has admitted he has no intention of easing up on the Twitter jibes he aims at Noel and has told Oasis fans to chill out about their feud, which has run since 2009 when the guitarist quit the band.
He said: “Lots of people say I need to chill out about Noel. Not until they stop Twitter. That **** will always get it from me.
“I’ve heard [my tweets] really annoy him. Someone told me the other week that the only thing that does his nut in are my tweets. Good. They will carry on and they will get bigger and better.
He slagged me off when we were in the same band! He’d do his interview, I’d come in to do mine and they’d go, ‘He doesn’t like you, does he?’ I’d be saying how great he was. He still has pops. He needs to know that I ain’t going away.”

Charli XCX's new album is a 'big pop party'

OHMYGOSSIP — Charli XCX’s new album is a “big pop party album to get f***ed up to”.
The ‘After the Afterparty’ hitmaker is known for her party animal persona and she has teased that her next record – the follow-up to 2014’s ‘Sucker’ – will emulate that rather than her hatred towards the music business.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, she said: “On my previous record, I was really annoyed at the music industry and felt like I had something to prove.
“After that, I didn’t feel I had anything to prove anymore.
“Also one of my favourite hobbies is partying, and I realised that I never actually made a party album.
“I never made an album that I would want to hear at a club.
“It was very indulgent in that sense because I just wanted to make an album that I could get f***ed up to.
“It’s the soundtrack to might nights.”
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old pop beauty – who previously admitted she looks like a “zombie” when she is drunk – is to treat her fans to a mixtape before her new record drops in May.
Charli has teamed up with both of her longtime collaborators SOPHIE and Stargate for her third studio album.
The ‘Doing It’ singer said she got them together because she wanted to mix their different styles to make a record of “progressive pop music”.
Charli feels it is important for artists to “shake things up” from time to time and has been incredibly inspired by some of her collaborators.
She previously said: “I think it always needs a shake up and I think multiple artists do that but I want to push it.
“I’ve been collaborating with people from PC Music so that’s been very inspiring for me – the way they think about music and the way that they create music and transferring that into like a more pop realm is something that is cool and yeah, it’s next level! I’m not really saying too much about it right now because I just want it to talk for itself. And it will.”

Ed Sheeran: Love Yourself 'wouldn't have made it' onto my album

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Sheeran says Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’ “wouldn’t have made it” onto his new album.
The 25-year-old singer penned the hit single which featured on Justin’s fourth studio album ‘Purpose’ in 2015, but has now said he gave the pop sensation the track because it wasn’t good enough to be featured on his own upcoming record ‘÷’.
Speaking to Carson Daly on American radio station 97.1 AMP Radio on Monday (09.01.17), Ed said of the track which was named Billboard’s #1 song of 2016: “That was a song I had written for ‘÷’. It just wouldn’t have made it. And then Justin took it and did his thing on it, and released it as a single and made it what it is.
“So going from a song that would have never been released to [being] the biggest song of last year – it just became Billboard’s #1 of 2016 of the whole year, and [was] nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammys – it just shows you that you shouldn’t always write stuff off.”
And despite the song originally being made with Ed’s album in mind, he did admit the 22-year-old pop megastar had an input as well.
He added: “[Justin] did have input on it, I wouldn’t say it was just all me.”
Ed – who released two new songs on Friday (06.01.17) ‘Castle on the Hill’ and ‘Shape of You’, both of which will feature on his new album – also wrote ‘Cold Water’ for Justin, Major Lazer, and MØ, although he says at the time he had forgotten he wrote it.
He said: “‘Cold Water’ was a weird one because I didn’t even know that song existed. It was a song I must’ve half-written somewhere at a time where I was writing a lot of songs and I did it at Benny Blanco’s house and then I got an email from Diplo just being like, ‘Yo! That ‘Cold Water’ song is dope! Can I have it?’ And I was like, ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about,’ so I just didn’t reply.”
“And then he emailed and was like, ‘Yo, Justin [Bieber] wants to hop on the ‘Cold Water’ song. Is that cool?’ And I’m just like, ‘What are you talking about?’… And then the song came out and it was number one and I was like ‘Oh, that song!’ I remember doing it, but it was really, really slow. I remember hearing it and being like ‘That kind of sounds like me. Oh wait, it was me.'”

Bobby Brown: My New Edition exit was like a comedy

OHMYGOSSIP — Bobby Brown thinks his exit from New Edition was worthy of a comedy.
The 47-year-old singer-songwriter starred in the chart-topping boy band in the 1980s, but left the group midway through the decade when he was voted out due to his bad behaviour – and he admits the circumstances surrounding his exit were farcical.
He said: “I was not comfortable or happy. We all came from the hood, but I came from the hood hood, from a family of gangsters and hustlers. I wanted to make some money.
“And I was wild and loose then – I had gotten my girlfriend pregnant, and drugs played a bit part in my life at that time. There were so many fights among the group, we could have put a whole comedy out.”
Bobby – who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his early thirties – admitted he always had ambitions of becoming a solo star.
And his resolve was strengthened when the group signed a terrible record deal with a label, which left them with a meagre $1.87 between them after a successful tour.
He told Billboard: “I felt like that was the beginning of the end. I had always wanted to be solo, and I knew that we had a chance to get a better deal at a major label.”
Bobby subsequently made unsuccessful attempts to rejoin the group, but it just led to further embarrassment for the band, which also included Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant.
Bobby – who developed alcoholism at an early age – recalled: “The Home Again Tour was a disaster [Bobby and Ronnie got into an onstage fight at one show]. And the next one, I was so far gone – two weeks before it started, I had a heart attack, but I went out there to stand onstage with my brothers.”

Amy Macdonald inspired by Ellie Goulding to get fit

OHMYGOSSIP — Amy Macdonald was inspired to get fit by her pop idol Ellie Goulding – and getting in shape has improved her vocals.
The 29-year-old Scottish singer is a huge fan of the ‘Still Falling For You’ hitmaker and she always pays close attention to Ellie’s workout routine on social media, which includes regular kickboxing sessions.
Seeing how fit Ellie is motivated Amy to hit the gym herself and since she started getting healthier her stamina on stage has increased and her voice has gotten stronger.
Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, she said: “I’ve never been a fitness fanatic but I have started in the last year and now it’s much easier for me to sing. I really empathise with Ellie and am inspired by how hard she works.
“My voice sounds so much better. I can enjoy a gig a lot more now as I’m not gasping for air.”
The ‘Mr Rock & Roll’ hitmaker also praised 30-year-old Ellie – who had to take a break from her ‘Delirium World Tour’ last year after being diagnosed with exhaustion – for her honesty about how hard touring is and how important it is to look after yourself.
Amy – who is about to release her fourth album ‘Under the Stars’ on February 17 – said: “I love Ellie – you see her in the gym more than you do out. To tour like that, people don’t realise how hard it is!
“They have this view that you just go out and get blind drunk, but it’s nothing like that. In the past people would say I’m not a real pop star or rock star because I don’t party every night but that’s not true. SO I’m glad she’s keeping it real too.”

Ed Sheeran will be topless in Shape of You video

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Sheeran will appear topless in the video for his new single ‘Shape Of You.’
The 25-year-old singer/songwriter made his music comeback last week when he unveiled the track and second song ‘Castle on the Hill’.
Ed is yet to release either single’s video but has teased that in the promo for ‘Shape of You’ his fans will see him shirtless for the first time and doing pull-ups, an exercise which he found really tough because he’s not a “healthy individual”.
Discussing the ‘Shape of You’ video, he said: “Do you know what? They were filming it and they were getting me … like I’m not a very, like, healthy, fit individual, and they’re like, ‘Right, we’re gonna do these pull-ups.’ And I was like, ‘I can literally do one pull-up,’ and they were making me do six or seven in a row whilst filming me.”
Ed insists his topless debut in the upcoming video is not him attempting to become a pop heartthrob like his friend Justin Bieber, but is actually a “gritty” part of the promo.
Speaking on the Capital Breakfast show which he co-hosted with Dave Berry, George and Lilah on Monday (09.01.17), he shared: “But it’s not in a, like, Justin Bieber walking out of the sea kind of way. It’s a kind of like, quite gritty…”
However, the video is not going to be too serious as Ed revealed it will get quite comical at its conclusion.
He added: “It’s like really serious and then the last 30 seconds you’re like ‘what the hell is going on here?”
Ed also spilled he has been working with pop stars Zara Larsson and Anne-Marie and he was blown away by both girls’ vocal talents.
He said: “I’ve never been in the studio with two sort of new singers who just nail it first time. They literally just walked in, sung it and then walked out. I was like, wow, that was … they sung it well too.”

U2 announce The Joshua Tree Tour 2017

OHMYGOSSIP — U2 have confirmed the dates for ‘The Joshua Tree Tour 2017′.
The legendary Irish rock group – comprised of Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. – will perform a number of shows to mark the 30th anniversary of their 1987 seminal LP of the same name.
The run of shows sees them perform at London’s Twickenham Stadium on July 8, and Dublin’s Croke Park on July 22 – which will mark three decades since they performed the record in their hometown in 1987 at the famous Jones’ Road venue.
Talking about what will be a nostalgia trip, guitarist The Edge said: “It seems like we have come full circle from when ‘The Joshua Tree’ songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk.
“To celebrate the album – as the songs seem so relevant and prescient of these times too – we decided to do these shows, it feels right for now.
“We’re looking forward to it.”
And frontman Bono added: “Recently I listened back to ‘The Joshua Tree’ for the first time in nearly 30 years … it’s quite an opera. A lot of emotions which feel strangely current, love, loss, broken dreams, seeking oblivion, polarisation … all the greats … I’ve sung some of these songs a lot … but never all of them. I’m up for it, if our audience is as excited as we are … it’s gonna be a great night. Especially when we play at home. Croke Park … it’s where the album was born, 30 years ago.”
The ‘Vertigo’ hitmakers will be joined by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on the UK and Europe dates.
Former Oasis guitarist Noel said: “It will be both a pleasure and an honour to play my part in what still remains the greatest show on earth.”
‘The Joshua Tree Tour 2017’ Europe and UK dates are as follows:
July 8 London, UK Twickenham with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Ed Sheeran smashes Spotify streaming record

OHMYGOSSIP — Ed Sheeran has made history with both his comeback singles reaching over 13 million streams in 24 hours.
The 25-year-old singer has beaten One Direction with his new tracks, ‘Shape of You and ‘Castle on the Hill’, which have been streamed globally 6,868, 642 and 6,168, 395 times respectively, smashing Spotify’s ‘Day 1’ UK and global streaming record.
The ‘Thinking Out Loud’ hitmaker has knocked the ‘History’ boy band, who achieved 4,759,698 streams with ‘Drag Me Down’ in August 2015, off the top spot.
The streaming record follows the tracks making it to number one and number two in the UK charts.
Ed wrote ‘Shape of You’ with pop superstar Rihanna in mind but decided to keep the song for himself in the end as he didn’t think Rihanna would want to sing those lyrics.
He said: “But then I was singing some of the lyrics and was like Rihanna is not going to sing these words so kept it to myself.”
And ‘Castle on the Hill’ is a “love song” to his home county, Suffolk.
He said: “‘Castle on the Hill’ is a love song for Suffolk because I don’t think anyone has ever done that.
“I’ve shot the music video actually in Suffolk and the cast of it are people from my high school. The main guy who looks just like me is weirdly from my sixth form.”
The flame-haired star had originally planned to release his new music in September and confessed to playing some of his new tracks for strangers he met in the pub.
He added: “The funny thing is while I have music waiting to be released I usually end up playing it to random people. Normally when I’ve been out drinking I’ll be like, ‘Hey mate do you want to hear my new song?’ that happens a lot.”
Ed delighted his fans when he released two songs this week after a year-long hiatus.

David Bowie EP No Plan drops on his 70th birthday

OHMYGOSSIP — A new David Bowie EP was released in honour of the late star’s 70th birthday.
The ‘Let’s Dance’ hitmaker posthumously released three new tracks, ‘Killing a Little Time, ‘When I Met You’ and ‘No Plan’, and the song ‘Lazarus’ from his final LP ‘Backstar’ is also included on the mini-album, which is out now.
The lead track and the name of the EP, ‘No Plan’, comes with its very own music video directed by Tom Kingston.
And once again aims to unfold the mystery behind his character, Thomas Newton, in the movie ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ and follows the themes of space travel.
The studio recordings were co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti and recorded with Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the same band that played on Bowie’s final LP ‘Blackstar’.
On Sunday (08.01.17) – what would have been his birthday – Gary Oldman and Simon Le Bon led a musical tribute to David Bowie in his hometown of Brixton.
The 58-year-old ‘Dark Knight’ star – who curated the event – and the Duran Duran frontman put on a spectacular performance as
crowds gathered outside the O2 Academy music venue in south London and watched Simon, 58, perform Bowie’s 1983 hit ‘Let’s Dance’.
Before the evening’s proceedings, Bowie’s widow Iman paid a touching tribute to the ‘Starman’ hitmaker – who died of cancer almost a year ago – by sharing a sketch on Instagram featuring the late singer as a child, in black and white except for his famous Aladdin Sane make-up and distinctive mismatched eyes.
She captioned the post: “Jan 8th #ForeverLove#BowieForever (sic)
And just two days ago, Iman also shared a black and white photo of herself and her late spouse embracing on a beach.
She wrote alongside the picture: “#fbf #imanarchive#BowieForever (sic)”

Paramore 'looking for what's supposed to come' after last LP

OHMYGOSSIP — Paramore are “looking for what’s supposed to come” after their last album.
The rock duo – now comprised of lead singer Hayley Williams and guitarist Taylor York – released their self-titled fourth studio album in 2013, and have now taken to Instagram to explain that writing the follow-up has not been “an easy task” and the ‘Misery Business’ hitmakers needed to take “a rest” before continuing with their work.
Posting a picture on the photo-sharing website of the two musicians in the studio, 28-year-old Hayley wrote: “about a year ago, we began writing & demoing songs for #5 / / / following up our self-titled album didn’t seem like it was going to be an easy task and, unsurprisingly, it was not. the problem about comparing yourself to… yourself… is that even though it’s better than looking elsewhere, you’re still looking in the wrong direction. for me, it wasn’t until i trusted that the past is finished with me that i could go looking for what’s next. our pasts can be a great comforter, or a horror movie; a noose, or a shield… but it is “past” for a reason. after a rest, we have to go looking for what’s supposed to come after that. – h (sic)”
The struggle for the ‘Still Into You’ rockers comes after their bassist Jeremy Davis quit the band in 2015, following the departure of brothers Zac and Josh Farro in 2010.
Zac, 26, sparked rumours in 2016 that he would be re-joining the ‘Ain’t It Fun’ musicians after he was spotted behind a drum kit in a photograph posted on the band’s Twitter, but later clarified whilst he would be working on the drums for the recording of the album, he would not be returning as a full time member.
As of yet, it is unknown when Paramore’s fifth studio venture is to be expected.

Outkast class offered at US university

OHMYGOSSIP — An Outkast class is being offered at a university in Savannah, Georgia.
The hip hop duo – André ‘André 3000’ Benjamin and Antwan ‘Big Boi’ Patton – will be studied in a new class by Dr Regina Bradley, a professor in the Languages, Literature and Philosophy department at Armstrong State University.
The lecture series, ‘OutKast and the Rise of the Hip-Hop South’, will start this month.
Dr Bradley told Savannahnow.com: “My areas of interest are African-American literature and popular culture. I try to find ways to connect those… Often, students get most of their information, their outlook from how they engage in popular culture.
“The course will focus on how Outkast’s ideas about the South and southernness seep into other Southern writers.
“Their final project is doing a paper that’s 12-15 pages … for what I call a ‘nerdy hip-hop review’. They’ll take an album of their choice – preferably an Outkast album – and give a discussion of the themes and what they hear.
“For the folks who are just as in love with Outkast as I am, I also want them to feel like they can contribute to the class – that’s particularly important. I also don’t want to overlook or shun the folks who aren’t familiar with hip-hop at all. I’m pretty sure I have a couple of folks in there who have no clue who Outkast is or don’t listen to hip-hop at all, which is why they’re there – they want to learn something different.”
Big Boi posted an article about the course on Facebook and later said: “I am originally from Savannah, and I remember Armstrong, so that is just super dope.”
Dr Bradley is also currently working on a book about Outkast, ‘Chronicling Stankonia: OutKast and the Rise of the Hip Hop South.’
