Demi Lovato: TV and film glorify unhealthy body image

OHMYGOSSIP — Demi Lovato has spoken out against the media for putting pressure on young girls. The Camp Rock actress said that the TV and film industries “glorify an unhealthy body image” that young women aspire to.

“I feel as if TV and movies are now glorifying an unhealthy body image which puts a lot of pressure on young girls who are trying to find themselves,” she told ITV1’s Daybreak.

“A lot of girls that are young are insecure and they look to the media to see what she should look like. The film and TV industry should take more responsibility.”

The 19-year-old singer was sent to rehab in 2010 after struggling with an eating disorder, cutting and depression.

When asked what advice she would give young girls that look up to her, she explained: “As much as it hurts to be bullied, always rise above it, vocalise what’s going on. You can’t keep it inside, it’s dangerous to let emotions bottle up.”

Speaking about her getting over her own troubles in the past year, she added: “A lot of people ask me, ‘Do you think it’s because you started so young?’ I say, ‘No, because the problems were starting when I was 12 years old’.

“I was bullied when I was 12, that’s when I got really sick. It’s been going on a while now, but finally I’ve gotten help.”

On her recent single ‘Skyscraper’, she said: “I’m very proud of it, it’s the perfect anthem for what I’ve gone through in the past year. It’s about overcoming issues, it’s the perfect song to come back with.”

Hunger Games fashion comes to life. Interview with Judianna Makovksy

Foto: Ohmygossip.com Judianna Makovsky

OHMYGOSSIP — We all know that The Hunger Games is a very visually appealing film fashion-wise.  Effie and all the Capitol citizens and their bright array of zany, over the top vestments are featured prominently.  Lucky for us the LA Times had the opportunity to interview Judianna Makovsky, the costume designer for the film, to give us some insight into just what inspired the Hunger Games looks, Chicago Tribune mediates.

How the Capitol style was perfected:

For inspiration for the Capitol costumes, Judianna Makovsky looked at Italian Fascist architecture and the work of 1930s and ’40s fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli for her “sense of elegance and amusement.”

Filmgoers get their first taste of the Capitol when Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), the ambassador to the Hunger Games, arrives for the Reaping dressed in a bum-hugging fuchsia dress and a pink wig with a vintage 1930s flower hat stuck on. Her gold booties are from Alexander McQueen, whose work comes to mind when looking at the Capitol dwellers.

Effie is one part Marie Antoinette and one part Isabella Blow, and she can barely walk in her shoes — which was intentional. “She is a fashion victim,” Makovsky says.

And on the ‘girl on fire’ dress:
For the “girl on fire” dress Katniss wears when she’s interviewed on TV on the eve of the games, Makovsky was inspired by Orry-Kelly’s transformative gowns in the 1962 film “Gypsy,” starring Natalie Wood as an awkward tomboy who transforms into legendary burlesque stage performer Gypsy Rose Lee.

“I wanted the dress to be red, but not so covered in stones that it would look like something out of’Dancing With the Stars,’” Makovsky says. The silk taffeta and organza dress has vertical pleats, so that it moves when Katniss twirls, and flame-like crystal embroidery. The dress is not really “engulfed” in flames, as the book describes, but the skirt does ignite (with the help of CG).

Tens, if not hundreds of fashion bloggers have now become curious and seem to be simultaneously claiming that “The Hunger Games” costume designer Judianna Makovsky seems to have been inspired also by Ohmygossip Couture, Buzznet mediates. Some even assert that part of her creation has directly been influenced by Ohmygossip Couture photoshoots.

Clothing and style play a hudge role in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, “The Hunger Games.” Costume designer Judianna Makovsky, who previously worked on the “Harry Potter” films, had a difficult task of bringing to life the elaborate garments of the rich Capitol residents & accurately portraying the largely impoverished coal mining region of District 12.

Now there are plenty of rumours that Hunger Games costume designer Judianna Makovsky – creator of “Capitol Couture” – got inspiration from “Ohmygossip Couture’s” designer Helena-Reet Ennet? What do you think? Must admit the similarity is remarkable…

“We are lately heading toward this eclectic, spirited and scandalous style — the recent set of photoshoots are not next to modest, I must admit. I personally would not speculate about Judianna having traces of our work in her creation, yet it is nice to have this kind of feedback from Ohmygossip Couture fans and it is pleasant to see as a brand developer and also partly as a fashion designer that I employ conceptions and patterns of thought akin to the film costume designer currently among the world’s best known,” says the Ohmygossip Couture brand developer Helena-Reet to Gossip.ee.

OHMYGOSSIP — In order for Jennifer Lawrence to play accurately for the role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, her blonde locks needed to go. But, it seems that the brunette transformation wasn’t as effortless as one would think. In fact, it took a whopping $30,000 for hairstylist, Linda Flowers, to nail the perfect hair for the 21-year-old starlet! That’s one expensive head of hair!

Turns out it was all worth it for Jennifer since she didn’t like the idea of experimenting with her blonde hair. “I rented 30,000 dollars of hair, which is, I rented five $6,000 lace wigs all different shades of brown…So it made Jennifer comfortable to know that we weren’t gonna experiment with her color,” said Linda Flowers.

How to dress Harajuku style? Gallery

OHMYGOSSIP — Harajuku (原宿 “meadow lodging”)  is the common name for the area around Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo, Japan.

Every Sunday, young people dressed in a variety of styles including gothic lolita, visual kei, and decora, as well as cosplayers spend the day in Harajuku socializing. The fashion styles of these youths rarely conform to one particular style and are usually a mesh of many. Most young people gather on Jingu Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge that connects Harajuku to the neighboring Meiji Shrine area.

Harajuku is also a fashion capital of the world, renowned for its unique street fashion. Harajuku street style is promoted in Japanese and international publications such as Kera, Tune, Gothic & Lolita Bible and Fruits. Many prominent designers and fashion ideas have sprung from Harajuku and incorporated themselves into other fashions throughout the world.

Harajuku is also a large shopping district that includes international brands, its own brands, and shops selling clothes young people can afford.

The term “Harajuku Girls” has been used by English-language media to describe teenagers dressed in any fashion style who are in the area of Harajuku. This fashion infuses multiple looks and styles to create a unique form of dress. The cyber-punk look takes its influence from gothic fashion and incorporates neon and metallic colors.

Punk style in Harajuku is more of a fashion than a statement. Its fashion mainly consists of dark colors, plaid, chains, and zippers. Punk style is also one of the more gender-neutral fashions in Harajuku.

Ganguro is a style that symbolizes the average American teenager. The term translates to ‘black-faced’. The basic look is what Westerners would call a ‘California girl’, with bleached hair, dark skin, fake eyelashes and nails. It is not clear how Ganguro came to be. Many assume it originated in the early 1990s, and was meant as a way of rebelling against the traditional Japanese ideas of beauty (pale skin, dark hair, etc.)

Cosplay is more of a costume-based style. A cosplay enthusiast will usually dress as a fictional or iconic character from a band, game, movie, anime, or manga.

Ura-Hara is another section of Harajuku, which caters to a mostly male population interested in a hip-hop, graffiti, and skater fashion and culture. Ura-Hara is seen as the opposite of Harajuku in that it’s more hidden and reserved.

In addition to Harajuku is its counterpart, known as Visual Kei. This refers to the style of bands and their fanbase. The term Visual Kei literally means a ‘visual style of music’. The melodies of the music these bands perform often resemble eighties rock, heavy metal, or techno; in some cases, the sound is a good mix of the three. The fashion began in the 1980s, when American metal bands were popular. Japanese fans loved how their idols would dress frantically and paint makeup wildly on their faces, so they began to emulate their style. This mimicking is also known is costume play, or cosplay.

But how to dress Harajuku style?

Mix and (mis)match different fashions! What is now known as Harajuku (like Halloween in Japan every Sunday) style started as teens in the district began to integrate traditional Japanese attire, especially kimonos and geta sandals, into their wardrobe. Before, they wore primarily clothes that were influenced by the West, but by mixing the traditional with the modern, they created a new style. Other examples of mixing and matching including the punk look with the schoolgirl uniform or a goth look with designer clothes. In Harajuku, mixing different styles and mismatching colors and patterns is encouraged – you can do anything you want, as long as your outfit is a thoughtful expression of your individuality.
