Mary Tyler Moore: I’m an alcoholic

Mary Tyler Moore has opened up about her battle with alcoholism. The actress admits she fought and hid about her drinking problems for years.

“An alcoholic woman, in most people’s eyes, was one who had just really gotten sloppy, gotten dirty,” she said.

“Being able to come out and talk honestly about that (alcoholism) gave a lot of people the opportunity to look at themselves carefully and say, ‘Hey, yes I look good, my clothes are nice and I’m warm and delightful, but I’m also an alcoholic.’”

Mary Tyler Moore has previously revealed how diabetes has robbed her of her love of horseriding.

“I’ve lost a good deal of my vision, I’ve lost a sense of my balance. That’s why I can’t ride horses anymore… I don’t drive because of the vision… I’m not allowed to,” she said back in 2008.

“There are a lot of things – arthritis hits at an earlier age; anything that can go wrong goes wrong in a bigger, earlier way.”
