OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Emmerdale’ actor Andy Devine has died at the age of 79.
The star was best known for playing Shadrach Dingle in the ITV soap between 2000 and 2010 and he passed away in January – although the sad news has only just been revealed.
Public records reveal that Andy died on January 27 but the cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
The actor – who was born as Peter Devine – served in the Royal Navy during the 1960s before turning his hand to acting.
Devine’s other roles included featuring in several episodes of ‘Doctor Who’, the Channel 4 series ‘Queer as Folk’ and a small part in ‘Coronation Street’ in 1995.
Devine’s alter ego was a popular character during a decade on the Dales before dying in an emotional alcohol abuse storyline in 2010.
Tributes began flooding in for the actor as fans took to Twitter to pay their respects to the Devine.
One wrote: “Sad to read the news Andy Devine has died. Back in January it seems.
“Best known as #Emmerdale’s Shadrach Dingle, he played Betty’s wedding photographer in a 1995 episode of Coronation Street, returning in 2000 as a radio DJ.”
Another wrote: “Just heard the sad news that Andy Devine who played Shadrach Dingle in #Emmerdale and Bernard in Queer as Folk passed away in January. Brilliant comic characters that he played so well.”
