OHMYGOSSIP — Maria Bakalova has been left “speechless” by her Golden Globes nomination.
The 24-year-old actress has been nominated for Best Performance By an Actress In A Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her performance as Tutar Sagdiyev in mockumentary ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ and she thinks it is just “incredible” that her work has been recognised.
Maria told Deadline: “A person dreams and dreams and dreams but things are so unpredictable. It’s incredible what is happening, I’m speechless.”
The star – who played the daughter of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat in the comedy sequel – is the first Bulgarian actress to be nominated for a Golden Globe and she hopes her success will open up more opportunities for Eastern European performers.
Maria said: “What excites me and motivates me the most is the prospect of many Eastern European actors and creators being noticed and finding opportunities in Western cinema where they have not been represented.
“People who have an accent and may not be speaking perfect English but are working really hard on that. They could finally be given a chance to play multi-dimensional characters like Tutar.”
Maria also thanked co-star Sacha and the film’s bosses for helping her land the nomination.
She said: “To be able to build a character like that you need a great script and brave producers willing to get behind you and believe that you can do it.”
Bakalova is unsure about her next project but wants to do something with a “message that reflects the times we live in”.
She remarked: “Life is so fleeting – we are on this Earth for 60, 70, 80, 90 years at the most – but the art we create could live on forever as a document of what happened.”
