OHMYGOSSIP — Michael J. Fox is planning “a second retirement’ from acting.
The ‘Back to the Future’ star originally stepped away from performing in 2000 as he battled Parkinson’s disease and revealed that he is now prepared to bid farewell to his acting career for a second time due to his recent health problems.
Writing in his new book, ‘No Time Like the Future’, Michael explained: “The nascent diminishment in my ability to download words and repeat them verbatim is just the latest ripple in the pond.
“There are reasons for my lapses in memorisation – be they age, cognitive issues with the disease, distraction from the constant sensations of Parkinson’s, or lack of sensation because of the spine – but I read it as a message, an indicator.”
The 59-year-old actor continued: “There is a time for everything, and my time of putting in a twelve-hour workday, and memorising seven pages of dialogue, is best behind me.
“At least for now.”
Michael added that he would be content if he does end his acting career but hinted that his decision could “change”.
He wrote: “In fairness to myself and to producers, directors, editors and poor beleaguered script supervisors, not to mention actors who enjoy a little pace, I enter a second retirement.
“That could change, because everything changes. But if this is the end of my acting career, so be it.”
The ‘Family Ties’ star recently opened up about how Parkinson’s disease – which he was diagnosed with at the age of 28 in 1991 – had impacted his ability to perform.
Michael said: “My short-term memory is shot.
“I always had a real proficiency for lines and memorisation. And I have some extreme situations where the last couple of jobs I did were actually really word-heavy parts. I struggled during both of them.”
