OHMYGOSSIP — Nathalie Emmanuel is “curious to see” how Hollywood responds to the Black Lives Matter movement.
The 31-year-old star admitted she wants to see if “people’s outrage is real” or whether it was just for show, following protests across the world after the death of George Floyd in May.
Speaking to Rollacoaster Magazine, she said: “I’m excited to see how Hollywood and the world responds to the Black Lives Matter movement.
“I’m really interested to see if people’s outrage is real or whether it was just performative, and whether we see actual change within society.
“Also from the industry point of view – for entertainment, TV, film and media – I’m sort of curious to see how that pans out.”
Nathalie – who has starred in both ‘The Fast and Furious’ franchise and ‘Game of Thrones’ – noted she is sceptical, but she hopes to see “more behind-the-scenes action” to make a real change.
She added: “I’m hopeful but also with a healthy amount of scepticism because sometimes it comes and goes, and there’s a few movies that get made and are great, and then it dies off again.
“For me I’m looking for the more behind-the-scenes action: the crew, the writers, the producers, the filmmakers themselves or the directors themselves becoming more inclusive. I’m sceptical to protect my own heart.”
Meanwhile Nathalie – who played Missandei, the sole major black female character in ‘Game of Thrones’ – previously urged television show bosses to address representation issues “from the beginning”.
She admitted she and co-star Jacob Anderson – who played Grey Worm – felt very “conscious” of how important they were to people of colour, so called for other programmes to have more diverse casts so there isn’t one person given the focus of so many other people’s attention.
She said: “At the end of the day, if there’s ever a show on the level of ‘Game of Thrones’ again, representation has to be part of the conversation from the beginning. That way, there’s no single person who has to represent every other person of colour.
“It’s a conversation I used to have a lot with Jacob [Anderson], who played Grey Worm, the only other major non-white character in the series.
“We were always really conscious of how much our being part of ‘Game of Thrones’ mattered to people. It made us really protective of Missandei and Grey Worm.”
